Built as one of the original six naval shipyards in the country, the Charlestown Navy Yard served as a hub of innovation, an employer of skilled workers, and a home to officers, sailors, and Marines for 174 years. Today the area is a thriving mixed-use community with a strong maritime roots. The Charlestown Navy Yard Waterfront Resilience Plan ensures this historic waterfront is prepared for rising seas and stronger coastal storms. In coordination with the US Army Corps “Boston Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study,” which will dramatically change coastal areas throughout the harbor, the CNY Waterfront Plan proposes to raise the shoreline while enhancing public open space and maintaining access to the water.

As Site Planning and Urban Design Lead, OFTN is working closely with the engineering team, local stakeholders, the Army Corps, and the City to determine the optimal location of the coastal flood defense and exploring how it can be seamlessly integrated into the landscape.
